Medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra announced that Helse Nord RHF, a Norwegian healthcare region, has expanded its use of Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution to include digital pathology.

The digital workflow will streamline case reviews and collaboration among pathologists, improving patient care, especially for cancer patients.

The Swedish medical imaging company’s digital pathology solution will provide Helse Nord RHF with a scalable, vendor-neutral platform, reducing time spent on manual processes and enhancing data security.

Pathologists will now combine traditional microscopes with digital tools, allowing more close review and collaboration on cases.

It also enables faster, remote access to tissue samples’ digital images in comparison to using physical glass slides reviewed in microscopes.

The pathology contract, signed in November 2024, extends Helse Nord RHF’s partnership with Sectra, which has been in place since 2011.

Helse Nord RHF imaging services manager Kai-Sverre Fjellberg said: “We have used Sectra’s solution for many years to enhance our radiology operations and now look forward to realising similar benefits in the diagnostic workflows in pathology.

“We anticipate that the digital solution will enhance collaboration both between hospitals who often support each other with second opinions and expertise, and between the medical specialities that collaborate in complex care pathways such as cancer care.”

Sectra’s digital pathology module is part of its comprehensive enterprise imaging solution, offering a unified approach to all imaging needs while reducing operational costs.

The scalable and modular solution, centred around a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), enables healthcare providers to expand across different specialities and institutions.

Sectra Scandinavia general manager Petter Østbye said: “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Helse Nord RHF to include digital pathology.

“Many healthcare providers are adopting an enterprise imaging strategy as a key component to enhance patient outcomes.

“By integrating digital pathology into their workflow, Helse Nord RHF will experience enhanced collaboration among pathologists and other medical specialities, leading to more accurate and timely diagnoses.”

Last month, Sectra partnered with AZ Sint-Lucas Gent in Belgium to provide its advanced enterprise imaging solution.
