The Government of Peru and the UK Government have forged a new government to government (G2G) agreement to develop hospital infrastructure worth $630m for Peruvians.

Under the agreement, the UK government will deliver a large-scale hospital infrastructure for people in northern Peru.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing healthcare access in underserved regions and addressing regional disparities in healthcare services.

The plan includes the construction of the Piura High Complexity Hospital in Piura and the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital in La Libertad.

In addition, the deal strengthens the diplomatic and trade ties between the UK and Peru.

It will also enable a consortium of UK businesses, bringing both local and international expertise to the project.

The construction and management of the hospitals will be overseen by the Peruvian Health Investment Agency, PRONIS.

British Ambassador to Peru Gavin Cook said: “Today, the signing of this new Agreement is focused on closing gaps in health infrastructure and improving health services in a decentralised manner, promoting the implementation of hospitals following international best practices and standards in the care of people, and raising the quality of hospital infrastructure.

“We hope that this is just the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the UK and Peru in the field of health where the UK can share the experience of the National Health Service (NHS) and the entire ecosystem of hospitals, primary care clinics, equipment suppliers, laboratories and researchers in the service of the health for the population.”

The UK consortium, dubbed UK Healthcare Alliance, consisting of Gleeds, Currie & Brown, and Aecom, has been selected as partner on the large-scale hospital programme.

The consortium will provide essential technical assistance, design services, and programme management to advance the project.

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) also establishes a collaborative framework between the British Embassy in Lima and the Peruvian Government.

It will focus on health and social infrastructure, facilitating the exchange of practices and expertise, and fostering knowledge transfer at all levels.

The agreement marks the fourth G2G agreement between the UK government and Peru in the infrastructure sector.

Previous G2G agreements include the 2017 partnership for organising the Pan American and Parapan American Lima 2019 Games, the 2020 Reconstruction Programme, and the 2021 agreement for the Special Public Investment Project Bicentennial Schools.
