American healthcare system OhioHealth has unveiled its plans to build a new comprehensive outpatient cancer centre in Columbus, Ohio.

The new centre will expand access to cancer care and enhance the patient experience.

It will be located on the south parking lot of OhioHealth’s administrative campus, across from OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

OhioHealth is a network of associates, physicians, and volunteers, with 15 hospitals, three joint-venture hospitals, one managed-affiliate hospital, over 200 ambulatory sites, and other health services.

The cancer centre will offer a seamless experience for patients. Services and programmes will include surgical oncology clinics, radiation oncology, haematology, medical oncology, infusion services, diagnostics, lab services, and several specialised cancer clinics.

The new centre will span 199,000ft2, nearly doubling the size of OhioHealth’s administrative campus to 500,000ft2.

Construction is set to begin in spring 2026, with an expected opening for patient care in spring 2029.

The healthcare system currently employs over 400 cancer programme staff, with plans to add more than 140 staff members over the next decade, representing a one-third growth in oncology staffing.

Additionally, it will allow OhioHealth to enhance cancer care for growing communities while maintaining local outpatient and inpatient services such as chemotherapy management, imaging, and procedures.

The American healthcare system is partnering with Design Group and HKS for architecture and design, while Gilbane will oversee construction.

OhioHealth cancer care vice president Praveen Dubey said: “This comprehensive cancer centre will increase access to care for patients who are dealing with complicated and aggressive cancers.

“Cancer is scary. With the creation of this facility, we are making care more convenient for our patients and demonstrating that we know their care is a combination of clinical care and the experience every time they interact with us.

“This facility will provide a place for central Ohio residents and an option for our patients in the region if they need more complex care outside of their community.”

The new site will also expand OhioHealth’s long-term relationship with Columbus Oncology and Hematology, which will be co-located within the new cancer centre, leasing approximately 30,000ft2 for a medical oncology clinic, infusion services, and pharmacy.

OhioHealth and Columbus Oncology and Hematology have also partnered with the Dublin Cancer Center and Westerville Cancer Center.

In October this year, OhioHealth completed the divestment of its select laboratory assets to Quest Diagnostics.
