US-based metabolic health company knownwell has acquired online precision medical and obesity management clinic Alfie Health for an undisclosed sum.
Alfie Health utilises artificial intelligence (AI) to provide evidence-based recommendations for weight management.
knownwell, which is engaged in weight-inclusive primary care services, has separately secured a $20m Series A funding round led by Andreesen Horowitz (a16z) Bio + Health, with participation from Flare Capital Partners and Series Seed Lead.
The financial boost coincides with the acquisition of Alfie Health, which will see knownwell integrating the former’s AI-powered ObesityRx platform into its existing care framework.
Alfie Health’s technology analyses patient medical histories to tailor effective treatment strategies aimed at sustainable metabolic health improvements.
By leveraging data-driven insights to optimise costs and outcomes, knownwell aims to enhance its value-based care infrastructure and elevate clinical decision support capabilities. This integration is expected to bolster knownwell’s ability to deliver comprehensive metabolic health treatments at scale, further differentiating its patient experience.
knownwell founder and CEO Brooke Boyarsky Pratt said: “Weight management and primary care solutions are in higher demand than ever, which is why we’re expanding our leadership team to bring both James Chaukos and John Frager to knownwell to streamline our operations and empower our growth.
“Their extensive backgrounds in value-based care, health system and payor partnerships will fuel additional awareness and interest in the differentiators knownwell brings to the industry, now with an even stronger data-driven approach by combining knownwell and Alfie technology.”
knownwell operates through a hybrid care model combining virtual and in-person services, encompassing primary care, longitudinal specialty care, weight management, diabetes care, medication management, nutritional counselling, and behavioural health services.
The company simplifies complex processes like prior authorisations and collaborates with clinical referral partners, including PCPs and bariatric surgeons, to ensure seamless patient care pathways across geographies.
With the acquisition, knownwell aims to reshape the healthcare landscape by advocating for a comprehensive obesity treatment strategy over traditional medication-centric approaches.
Alexander Singh, founder and CEO of Alfie Health, will join knownwell as head of analytics, contributing to the company’s strategic growth in metabolic health management.
Singh said: “This acquisition by knownwell helps us deliver on our mission to provide patients in need with best-in-class obesity management.
“knownwell’s leadership, clinical expertise, and hybrid model make them a leader in obesity management, and their hybrid model will strengthen our high-touch care approach to improve patient results.”
