Kerecis, the company specialising in fish-skin-based wound care and tissue regeneration solutions, has launched SurgiClose Silicone, a new product in its SurgiClose product family.
SurgiClose Silicone combines a fish-skin graft and silicone support for the effective treatment of surgical and trauma wounds.
The SurgiClose family of products comprise intact fish skin intended for the management of trauma wounds and surgical wounds in the operating room.
The new product is offered as SurgiClose Silicone Adhesive with borders that overlap the fish skin underneath and SurgiClose Silicone Standard with non-overlapping borders.
Kerecis founder and CEO Fertram Sigurjonsson said: “Applying Kerecis fish skin to a surgical or trauma wound is a multi-step process that often requires supporting products such as sutures, staples, surgical tapes, contact layers, and wound dressings.
“The new SurgiClose Silicone product combines the fish skin with a silicone-contact layer and thus eliminates the need for one of the supporting products. This makes the workflow in the surgical theatre simpler and more cost-effective.”
Kerecis, a part of intimate healthcare products supplier Coloplast, develops fish skin and fatty acid products for cellular therapy, tissue regeneration, and protection.
The company uses sustainable Icelandic fish, gently processed with renewable energy, to retain its similarity to human tissue.
Its gentle processing preserves the skin’s original three-dimensional (3D) structure, and helps maintain its inherent natural strength, complexity, and molecules (such as fatty acids).
When applied to damaged human tissue, the company’s patented material supports the body’s own biological processes to promote healing and regeneration.
According to clinical studies, Kerecis products heal wounds faster than competitors.
Also, Kerecis is the only manufacturer of medical devices containing intact fish skin and is among the fastest-growing companies in the US biologics skin market.
Earlier this year, Kerecis launched Shield Spiral, which allows easy customisation and extends the company’s Shield silicon fish-skin combination product range.
Shield Spiral is a patented, intact fish-skin graft and silicone combination product that features perforated fenestration marks cut in a unique spiral pattern.
The 30mm graft can be reduced to 15mm by peeling away the 2mm outer spiral sections and cutting to the desired size, providing flexibility and precision in treatment.
