Health care system BayCare Health System has announced that it is piloting Aiva’s artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted voice technology to assist nurses in clinical documentation tasks.

The project was launched last month at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Aiva’s AI-powered Nurse Assistant allows nurses to chart in real-time using voice or text, saving time and making data instantly available for clinical decisions.

The technology helps nurses quickly document assessments and access patient information.

Aiva’s companion product, Patient Assistant, is already in over 10,000 acute and post-acute rooms across the US and Canada.

In addition to electronic health record (EHR), Patient Assistant integrates with hospital systems like interpreter services, work orders, dietary, patient education, and Smart Room devices.

Los Angeles-based Aiva said these features could be added to Nurse Assistant in the future.

BayCare president and CEO Stephanie Conners said: “We are excited to be at the forefront of how technology can improve health care, not just for patients, but also for those nurses and team members delivering care.

“Finding ways to better support clinical documentation is a win for everyone involved and allows nurses and our entire care teams more time and energy to focus on our patients.”

The health care system is already using AI-assisted software for physicians in offices for timely and accurate assessments to provide quality care and effective collaboration.

The St. Anthony’s project, launched in December, allows select team members to use the Aiva Health app on BayCare-issued iPhones. They can access electronic records and speak clinical updates directly into secure software. Onscreen verification ensures transcription accuracy before saving to the patient’s chart.

By collaborating with developers, BayCare and its team members can suggest improvements and showcase how voice-enabled AI can streamline documentation, reduce charting burdens, and improve care delivery.

Early results from the pilot show it has already reduced the need for caregivers to move computers between patient rooms, the health care system said.

St. Anthony Hospital nurse manager Liza Redmond said: “The nurses and the patient care techs will be able to go into a patient room and chart in real time.

“Being able to use this voice technology is a game changer for everyone in health care.”

In May 2023, BayCare Health System partnered with healthPrecision to launch advanced documentation tools and improve accuracy, efficiency, nurse satisfaction and patient outcomes.
