US-based healthcare technology company WellSky has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool, WellSky Extract for Home Health, to improve patient and clinician experience.
The new AI tool extracts key information from patient documents and drug label images to populate data in the electronic health record (EHR) and reduce manual documentation time.
WellSky Extract is available within the OASIS workflow of WellSky Home Health EHR and leverages Google’s Vertex AI platform and Gemini models.
The tool uses AI to analyse medication information from various sources, including referral documents, handwritten lists, and medication photographs.
Also, it automatically populates the medical information into the patient’s EHR, with options for manual review and confirmation.
Florida-based home health provider Concierge Home Care is an early adopter of WellSky Extract.
Concierge Home Care clinical services vice president Haley Brown said: “WellSky Extract is a game-changer for our clinicians.
“In the short time our team has been using the technology, we’ve already seen significant benefits, the most important being the increase in valuable time our clinicians are spending caring for patients instead of doing manual data entry.”
According to the company, home health patients take an average of 13 medications, and 1.5 minutes to manually feed the required information about a single medication.
The full medication reconciliation process takes nearly 20 minutes for each patient.
Early adopters of WellSky Extract are completing the medication reconciliation process within eight minutes for a single patient, a 60% time saving compared to the average.
It reduces the need for clinicians to manually gather and enter medication information, results in significant time savings, and allows clinicians to dedicate more time to patient care.
According to the company, WellSky Extract is the first of several AI-powered SkySense tools designed to enhance operational and clinician efficiencies.
Furthermore, SkySense will include WellSky Scribe, an ambient listening and transcription tool, and WellSky Summarize, for the synthesis of medical records, said WellSky.
WellSky chief analytics officer Wes Little said: “WellSky is developing innovative AI solutions to help address some of the biggest challenges healthcare organizations are facing today.
“At a time when clinician burnout is a leading cause of home health staffing shortages, AI tools like WellSky Extract can make a huge difference in streamlining administrative duties and freeing clinicians from burdensome after-hours work that affects their job satisfaction.”
