US-based rehabilitation services provider Brooks Rehabilitation has announced its plans to open an inpatient rehabilitation hospital on Mayo Clinic’s campus in Phoenix, Arizona.

Brooks specialises in treating patients after severe brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, and other complex conditions.

The company intends to start construction on the proposed new rehabilitation hospital in December of this year, with plans to open the hospital in 2026.

Brooks will invest up to $70m to build on the new hospital on an eight-acre site adjacent to Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix Hospital, near the Arizona State University Health Futures Center.

The three-story building, spanning an 80,000ft2 area, will have 60 private patient rooms and can be expanded according to the demand for services.

Once completed, the new hospital is anticipated to add more than 200 jobs to the market and will become a part of Brooks’ network of three existing rehabilitation hospitals in Florida.

Brooks Rehabilitation president and CEO Doug Baer said: “Brooks Rehabilitation is honoured to join with Mayo Clinic to further expand patient care and services and deliver on Brooks’ mission to empower people to achieve their highest level of recovery and participation in life through excellence in rehabilitation.”

“These organisations have aligned missions and values. This is a unique opportunity to bring the best in post-acute care to treat the most complex rehabilitation patients in the Phoenix market.”

The new hospital will be developed by Anchor Health Properties, with Kitchell as the general contractor, Hoefer Welker as architect and Kimley Horn as the civil engineer.

In addition, the hospital has signed an agreement with the Pan-American Financial Assistance Foundation, for the long-term lease of the property, with funding arranged by Veyron.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona CEO Richard Gray said: “At Mayo Clinic we specialise in treating rare, serious and complex conditions.

“After seeing the closely integrated working relationship that the Brooks team shares with our Mayo colleagues in Jacksonville, Florida, we are very pleased to welcome them to Phoenix.

“They have the proven ability to meet the complex rehabilitation needs of our patients and guide them in returning to their lives and highest functioning after illness or injury.”

Last year, Brooks admitted more than 5,000 rehabilitation hospital patients and cared for more than 60,000 throughout its entire system of rehabilitation care.

It has a multidisciplinary team of well-trained physicians, nurses, therapists, neuropsychologists, and other rehabilitation experts.

The team leverages advanced evidence-based treatments and technology, to help the patients achieve the highest functional recovery.

Brooks said that its expansion into Arizona enables new growth, improves clinical outcomes, and further supports its goal of enhancing post-acute rehabilitation.

Also, the move is in line with its other growth initiatives, including upgrading its existing three inpatient hospitals and building new outpatient service locations in Florida, said Brooks.

Brooks Rehabilitation System chief medical officer Trevor Paris said: “Physicians and patients at Mayo Clinic in Florida have trusted Brooks to provide expert rehabilitation care for many years.

“Our physicians are board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) to diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect movement, function and quality of life.

“This deep subspecialty training gives the physician even more expertise in the complexity of rehabilitation care.

“Brooks recently partnered with Mayo Clinic in Florida for a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program to increase access to this high level of care. We look forward to expanding this expertise to Arizona.”
