The Althaia Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has partnered with artificial intelligence company Robbie AI to improve safety of hospitalised patients.

The collaboration leverages AI to foresee any fall hazard situation and prevent patients from falling. It is expected to enhance safety of frail patients who, due to age or functional capacity, are considered at-risk.

A pilot study has already been carried out; the results of which demonstrate a 90% reduction in fall situations.

Robbie AI automated fall prevention technology uses real-time computer vision continuously to analyse patients’ body movements and facial expressions to predict risk situations.

It immediately sends customisable alerts to the nursing team when a risk of falling is detected.

Robbie AI co-founder and CEO Karen Marquez said: “Althaia’s commitment to patient safety makes them an ideal partner for Robbie AI.

“Their continued efforts to refine fall prevention workflows with Robbie AI’s solution have allowed us to achieve results that can be extended to other centres.”

The pilot study was carried out in the Acute Geriatrics Unit of the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Manresa and in the Long Stay Unit of the Hospital Center, for two years. During this phase, the AI-based system trained and refined to the different types of alerts indicated by the healthcare team.

It sent an average of 16 alerts per day/bed and, for high-risk patients, an average of 26 alerts per day/bed, with less than 1% false positives.

The system notified healthcare personnel when any action of the patient may be dangerous, such as getting out of bed, walking erratically, or difficulties sitting in bed.

According to Robbie AI, the system had been trained and tested with more than 2 billion images and 10,000 patients from different centres.
